<![CDATA[How to Get Rid of Pet Hair off Your Furniture]]>Fri, 27 May 2016 15:06:13 GMThttp://maidtheday.ca/maid-the-day-blog/how-to-get-rid-of-pet-hair-off-your-furnitureHow to Get Rid of Pet Hair off Your Furniture
I love my dogs, but they pretty much run the place, including stretching herself out on the sofa - whether we’re home or not. Even though they have short hair and doesn’t shed much, they still gets hair all over our couch.

Removing pet hair from furniture can be a nuisance, especially when you’re trying to get the furniture clean before company comes over. Who wants to see their guests get up from the couch and see their backside covered in Moxie or McDuff's hair? Now that’s embarrassing, for them and myself.

There are a variety of products on the market to get rid of pet hair from your furniture, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to getting rid of pet hair. We’ll go over some of them below.

First the most obvious:
Vacuuming Every time I vacuum floors, I also vacuum the furniture. After vacuuming it’s easy enough to put the upholstery tool on and give your furniture a good cleaning. Vacuum the cushions, under the cushions, back, sides and arms. Then use the crevice tool to get in the crevices and nooks. While you have the crevice tool on you can vacuum under the couch as well. I would suggest (if possible) to move it every so often and vacuum.

Household Sponge I have also used a dry or damp household sponge to lift pet hair from pillows and cushions on my couch. This method actually works quite well, just rinse the hair from the sponge when necessary, there is no need to have an over wet sponge, give it a good wringing out and damp is all you need. Make sure to store it somewhere where it won’t get used when cleaning the counters.

Petmate Pet Hair Magnet This looks just like a squeegee (except the pet hair magnet has a double row on the edge), and works in the same way. When I used the squeegee to remove pet hair from my ottoman, which my dog also loves to lay on, the hair bunched into piles. I was able to easily grab it and put it in the garbage, no muss, no fuss.

This can also work to remove pet hair from a comforter and clothing items. To use it on fabrics that are a bit slack, you may need someone to help hold it taut or if you’re using it to remove pet hair from jeans, try it while wearing the jeans.

Magic Lint Brush I used this on my microfiber couch cushions, it works just like it would if you were removing lint from your pants. It pulled the hair off the cushions no problem. When you’re done, reverse swipe it to remove the pet hair. You can also use your hand to brush the hair off and into the garbage it goes.

This is not a sticky lint brush, which I liked because I can use it a long time. This brush is made of plastic and could break if you’re not careful when using the swivel.

Using Damp Rubber Gloves There are quite a few sites on the internet claiming that a damp rubber glove works great at picking up pet hair and I have to admit it did do a fairly good job – in the beginning. The problem is the rubber dries pretty quickly and the pet hair I did get up starting falling off the glove back onto the furniture.

If you want the truth, my bare hands worked better than the rubber glove method. I don’t know this for certain but it might be because there is a slight texture to skin where the surface of a rubber gloves is a bit more smooth?

Lint Roller If after trying one of the above and you still have a little pet hair remaining on the furniture, you can always get out the lint roller to pick up some last remaining bits of pet hair. If you don’t have a lint roller and have a roll of duck tape lying around – wrap a couple pieces around your hand (inside out) and go over the furniture.

I hope you find one of our suggestions useful to you.]]>

You’ve spent a better part of your Saturday cleaning the house from top to bottom but still it doesn’t look like those model homes you see in magazines or online.

Let’s face it, they are called model homes for a reason – they are fresh and new, color coordinated, very nice matching furniture, fresh flowers, no dogs, no cats – they are staged to make a photo look 100 times better.

They are so appealing we want the same thing for our house but can we really have our homes looking like a model home?
I believe if we are diligent, then yes, we can have our homes just as nice as a model home. It’s not as hard as you might think. Below are some tips to add that extra sparkle into your home.

Cleaning and De-cluttering Rooms
Cleaning is more than just getting rid of the dirt, to have your house looking like those you see in the magazines, it will require some additional work.

Toss Out the Old
I know we rarely see what’s inside cabinets when looking at model homes but personally, when I change the arrangement of my home and do a good cleaning, I feel better knowing I’ve covered all the bases.

Go through kitchen cabinets, the pantry, bathroom closets and cabinets, bedroom closets, etc. Get rid of all outdated foods, throw out ratty torn dishtowels, and if you save all the plastic containers (with lids) that food items come in, I’m betting some of these can be recycled.

Throw away old medications and crusty razors, do away with old clothes and items that don’t fit and so on.

De-clutter Rooms
The more stuff we have laying around, the messier our homes look. It doesn’t matter in which room you’re in – too much stuff left sitting out makes a space look cluttered.

Family Memorabilia
I know there are family things you have an emotional attachment to, if it’s an heirloom I understand, if it’s something passed down to you that you don’t like, do you really need to keep it? Can you pass it on to another family member?

If you’re like me and you save some of your kids projects, instead of having them hanging willy nilly on the walls or the refrigerator, keep a scrapbook of the artwork they’ve done. It’s fun to walk down memory lane and to flip the pages with your kids. You can also frame a special piece and add it to a feature wall (and change out the picture as they grow).

In the Kitchen
Take the kitchen, for instance, try and only keep items out you use daily. Do you make waffles every morning before sending the kids off to school or leaving for work? If the answer is no, keep the waffle iron in a cabinet or in the pantry. A good rule of thumb, only keep out what you use on a daily basis, like the coffee machine.
It doesn’t take long to fill the dishwasher, before bedtime collect dirty cups and plates instead of leaving them out all night and run a cycle if the dishwasher is full.

Living Areas
In living areas, instead of keeping a host of books, magazines and movies scattered on tabletops and shelves, hide them in an ottoman, better yet, toss the old and keep the new (which these can be neatly stacked on a coffee table). I love holding books and magazines but nowadays, most information can easily be searched for on the internet and pictures are everywhere, so there isn’t much need to hang on to these for life.

Keep knickknacks to a minimum – you don’t see many of these in model homes. Pictures don’t need to adorn every square inch of every wall. A feature wall is nice (maybe the wall going up the stairs), a picture over the fireplace or a picture over the couch.

Bedrooms
Before lights out – spend a few minutes throwing dirty clothes in the hamper, putting toys in the toy box, hanging clothes up, etc.

Organizing Rooms
To help keep things organized and clutter free use matching baskets, nice decorative storage boxes on shelves, clear plastic containers for under bed and closet storage. There are so many options and colors I’m sure you’ll find something suitable for your home.

Living Room/Family Room
If you can, try moving the furniture away from the wall. This can make the room look more comfortable, cozy and inviting. When it’s time to turn the lights out, pick up remotes and tidy the room a little before you retire for the night.

Office
If you don’t have an office and pay bills in the kitchen, set aside a drawer where you can keep bills, calculator, pens, sticky notes, and other office supplies. If you need a file cabinet, this can be placed in the coat closet. If you have an office keep papers filed and new mail in a letter tray or something similar, keep a few pens and pencils in a holder and just the necessities on the desktop.

Bathroom
In the bathtub/shower area, use a caddy of some sort for shampoo, conditioner, face wash, shavers, and soaps. Only keep items on the counter that are necessary, take a look at under the sink or drawer storage options for personal accessories such as: hair pins, hair bands, jewelry and other personal care products to help keep the bathroom clutter free.

Mud Room/Laundry Room
If you enter the house through the garage and have space in the mud room or laundry room create a cubby space for each member of the family where coats, shoes, school bags, purses and other personal items can be left when you get home. The same can be done at the front entrance except maybe use a bench with coat hangers and cubbies below the seat for shoes.

Painting Walls
A great way to make over a room is with paint. A fresh coat of paint can transform any room, small or large and make it feel welcoming and cozy. Pick a color that compliments existing furniture and/or accessories. There’s really no limit to the colors you can use.

If you’re not sure about paint colors and if the room you are painting is small, pick a light color, this can help the room appear more light, airy and spacious. If the room is larger you can choose darker colors to make the room feel cozy.

Make the call to our trusted partner Leesha Cunningham at WOW 1 DAY PAINTING Ottawa to help you pick up some color samples. There’s enough color to totally inspire you.

The Little Things Matter
It doesn’t take much to keep your home looking great, sometimes it’s the little things we can easily do that will make all the difference.
 • Open the curtains to let the sunshine in.
 • Fluff the pillows on the couch.
 • Splurge a little and buy colorful fresh flowers for the living and dining rooms.
 • Fold throw blankets and put them away at the end of the night.
 • Our Moms were right – a bedroom looks amazing when you make the bed. Take a few minutes before leaving the house to make the bed and pick up clothes.

Clean Regularly
Vacuum, clean baseboards and mop floors regularly, keep windows clean and clear so all rooms are bright and cheery. Dust with a product like the Swiffer Duster or my favorite Microfiber clothes leaving your home not only clean but dust free too.

It doesn’t have to take long to make your house look better. Cleaning as you move around the house will soon become a regular habit and you can get the whole family in the routine too!]]>
<![CDATA[Health Benefits of Regular House Cleaning]]>Tue, 12 Apr 2016 03:38:20 GMThttp://maidtheday.ca/maid-the-day-blog/health-benefits-of-regular-house-cleaningThere are many benefits to a clean house. Not only for aesthetic reasons, but for health ones as well. This is especially true if we have pets, kids and family members with medical conditions such as allergies and asthma.

Here are 5 healthy benefits of regular house cleaning.

1. Reduce allergens
With a cleaner, dust free home, we can reduce allergens in the air that cause an allergic outbreak. Simple tasks like dusting, vacuuming and moping can help provide a cleaner and more pleasant home for you and your family.

2. A clean home reduces stress
Coming home to a clean house after a stressful day on the job can provide a natural sanctuary but if you come home to a messy, cluttered home, the stress will creep up on you.

3. Reduce pests and insects in the home
Pests thrive in dirty areas especially in the summertime. Cleaning your kitchen and bathroom on a regular basis will help to greatly reduce the likelihood of an infestation. Also, make sure to never leave dirty dishes or leftover food lying around. Clean dirty doormats in entryways as well to prevent dirt, dust and mud being tracked into the home.

4. Mold prevention
Mold likes to grow in dark, warm and damp areas in the home and is very bad for your health. Kitchen sinks and shower walls and tubs can provide these ideal conditions for mold growth. Make sure to clean your shower walls and tub as well as your kitchen and bathroom sinks frequently and wipe off excess water from shower walls with a squeegee after each use. If you have a bathroom fan, also turn that on after each shower or bath to reduce moisture build up.

5. Stop the spread of germs.
By cleaning heavily used items and surfaces like the remote control, doorknobs, light switches and the fridge handle regularly will help stop the spreading of these germs from surface to surface. Also, small children and infants may place their hands in their mouths after touching surfaces (including flooring for those children who crawl), making regular cleanings of all surfaces very important.

<![CDATA[Green Cleaning Tips To Prevent Mold In Your House]]>Thu, 07 Apr 2016 00:40:35 GMThttp://maidtheday.ca/maid-the-day-blog/green-cleaning-tips-to-prevent-mold-in-your-houseHaving mold in your house can be a real issue. Prevent the problem before it starts, or clear the mold right away with these green cleaning solutions. Go the natural way to keep mold at bay. I prefer using natural green cleaning products in my home so they’re safe for my family and pets. I hope you find these tips useful!

Prevent Mold In Your House With These 3 Green Cleaning Tips
Mold can appear in many locations around the household and is most active in hot and humid weather. You can find a solution through the use of humidifiers, but once the problem appears, there are other ways you can handle the growth of mold. You can rely on natural solutions instead of using bleach and other harsh chemicals. There are quite a few ways you can make this work, but we will focus on three of them for the purpose of keeping things practical and simple.

The three solutions you should keep in mind are tea tree oilgrapefruit seed extract and white vinegar. There are benefits and drawbacks to them but all three are very efficient fungicides capable of destroying mold spores with repeated contact. There is something else you need to keep in mind, letting mold live for far too long is not only dangerous for your health, but is also a real problem for people suffering from allergies. You need to contain the issue as much as you can as mold infestations can also cause fatigue when inhaled or even worse health conditions, which are not desirable.
Using these for kitchen cleaning and bathroom cleaning is advisable, but you can also work on carpet and upholstery cleaning if you have mold issues there too.
Keep your eyes open and prevent mold as best as you can with the following solutions:

1. Tea Tree Oil | Prevent Mold In House
Having a spray made from tea tree oil can help destroy mold and mildew anywhere. You can use it when working on leaking roofs, moldy ceilings or even furniture pieces. Tea tree oil is fairly inexpensive, but you can use it to solve a lot of problems, especially if you need to deal with harder spots. Another thing to consider is that tea tree oil also has a stronger smell, which usually disappears in a few days. Use two teaspoons of tea tree oil and mix them in two cups of water. Pour in a spray bottle and shake it until they mix properly. Finally, spray it on your spot as needed and let it sit so it can do its magic. Use it for kitchen cleaning and bathroom cleaning as well.

2. Grapefruit Seed Extract | Prevent Mold In House
It is similar to tea tree oil, but has no lingering scent. You can work on combining twenty or so drops of it with two cups of water, once again using a spray bottle to apply it to places that need the treatment. The results are quite amazing if you need to destroy mold and mildew. It is fair to say you should expect great results when using it.

3. Distilled White Vinegar | Prevent Mold In House
It is able to kill more than 80% of your common mold, making it a cheap and effective mold counter. Pour the vinegar in a spray bottle and apply it directly to mold-affected areas, letting it dry off for better results. In a few hours, the smell will disappear and you can wipe the area. Use distilled white vinegar to avoid staining of any surfaces.

<![CDATA[18 Five-Minute Decluttering Tips to Start Conquering Your Mess]]>Mon, 04 Apr 2016 03:03:43 GMThttp://maidtheday.ca/maid-the-day-blog/18-five-minute-decluttering-tips-to-start-conquering-your-mess“Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein

When your home is filled with clutter, trying to tackle a mountain of stuff can be quite overwhelming.
So here’s my advice: start with just five minutes. Baby steps are important. Sure, five minutes won’t barely make a dent in your mountain, but it’s a start. Celebrate when you’ve made that start!
Then take another five minutes tomorrow. And another the next day. Before you know it, you’ll have cleared a whole closet or a room and then half your house and then … who knows? Maybe before long your house will be even more uncluttered than mine.

We’ll have a challenge!
For those who are overwhelmed by their clutter, here are some great ways to get started, five minutes at a time.
 1. Designate a spot for incoming papers. Papers often account for a lot of our clutter. This is because we put them in different spots — on the counter, on the table, on our desk, in a drawer, on top of our dresser, in our car. No wonder we can’t find anything! Designate an in-box tray or spot in your home (or at your office, for that matter) and don’t put down papers anywhere but that spot. Got mail? Put it in the inbox. Got school papers? Put it in the inbox. Receipts, warranties, manuals, notices, flyers? In the inbox! This one little change can really transform your paperwork.
 2. Start clearing a starting zone. What you want to do is clear one area. This is your no-clutter zone. It can be a counter, or your kitchen table, or the three-foot perimeter around your couch. Wherever you start, make a rule: nothing can be placed there that’s not actually in use. Everything must be put away. Once you have that clutter-free zone, keep it that way! Now, each day, slowly expand your no-clutter zone until it envelopes the whole house! Unfortunately, the neighbors don’t seem to like it when you try to expand the no-clutter zone to their house, and start hauling away their unused exercise equipment and torn underwear when they’re not at home. Some people don’t appreciate simplicity, I guess.
 3. Clear off a counter. You want to get your house so that all flat spaces are clear of clutter. Maybe they have a toaster on them, maybe a decorative candle, but not a lot of clutter. So start with one counter. Clear off everything possible, except maybe one or two essential things. Have a blender you haven’t used since jazzercise was all the rage? Put it in the cupboard! Clear off all papers and all the other junk you’ve been tossing on the counter too.
 4. Pick a shelf. Now that you’ve done a counter, try a shelf. It doesn’t matter what shelf. Could be a shelf in a closet, or on a bookshelf. Don’t tackle the whole bookshelf — just one shelf. Clear all non-essential things and leave it looking neat and clutter-free.
 5. Schedule a decluttering weekend. Maybe you don’t feel like doing a huge decluttering session right now. But if you take the time to schedule it for later this month, you can clear your schedule, and if you have a family, get them involved too. The more hands pitching in, the better. Get boxes and trash bags ready, and plan a trip to a charity to drop off donated items. You might not get the entire house decluttered during the weekend, but you’ll probably make great progress.
 6. Pick up 5 things, and find places for them. These should be things that you actually use, but that you just seem to put anywhere, because they don’t have good places. If you don’t know exactly where things belong, you have to designate a good spot. Take a minute to think it through — where would be a good spot? Then always put those things in those spots when you’re done using them. Do this for everything in your home, a few things at a time.
 7. Spend a few minutes visualizing the room. When I’m decluttering, I like to take a moment to take a look at a room, and think about how I want it to look. What are the most essential pieces of furniture? What doesn’t belong in the room but has just gravitated there? What is on the floor (hint: only furniture and rugs belong there) and what is on the other flat surfaces? Once I’ve visualized how the room will look uncluttered, and figured out what is essential, I get rid of the rest.
 8. Create a “maybe” box. Sometimes when you’re going through a pile of stuff, you know exactly what to keep (the stuff you love and use) and what to trash or donate. But then there’s the stuff you don’t use, but think you might want it or need it someday. You can’t bear to get rid of that stuff! So create a “maybe” box, and put this stuff there. Then store the box somewhere hidden, out of the way. Put a note on your calendar six months from now to look in the box. Then pull it out, six months later, and see if it’s anything you really needed. Usually, you can just dump the whole box, because you never needed that stuff.
 9. Put a load in your car for charity. If you’ve decluttered a bunch of stuff, you might have a “to donate” pile that’s just taking up space in a corner of your room. Take a few minutes to box it up and put it in your trunk. Then tomorrow, drop it off.
 10. Create a 30-day list. The problem with decluttering is that we can declutter our butts off (don’t actually try that — it’s painful) but it just comes back because we buy more stuff. So fight that tendency by nipping it in the bud: don’t buy the stuff in the first place. Take a minute to create a 30-day list, and every time you want to buy something that’s not absolutely necessary (and no, that new Macbook Air isn’t absolutely necessary), put it on the list with the date it was added to the list. Make a rule never to buy anything (except necessities) unless they’ve been on the list for 30 days. Often you’ll lose the urge to buy the stuff and you’ll save yourself a lot of money and clutter.
 11. Teach your kids where things belong. This only applies to the parents among us, of course, but if you teach your kids where things go, and start teaching them the habit of putting them there, you’ll go a long way to keeping your house uncluttered. Of course, they won’t learn the habit overnight, so you’ll have to be very very patient with them and just keep teaching them until they’ve got it. And better yet, set the example for them and get into the habit yourself.
 12. Set up some simple folders. Sometimes our papers pile up high because we don’t have good places to put them. Create some simple folders with labels for your major bills and similar paperwork. Put them in one spot. Your system doesn’t have to be complete, but keep some extra folders and labels in case you need to quickly create a new file.
 13. Learn to file quickly. Once you’ve created your simple filing system, you just need to learn to use it regularly. Take a handful of papers from your pile, or your inbox, and go through them one at a time, starting from the top paper and working down. Make quick decisions: trash them, file them immediately, or make a note of the action required and put them in an “action” file. Don’t put anything back on the pile, and don’t put them anywhere but in a folder (and no cheating “to be filed” folders!) or in the trash/recycling bin.
 14. Pull out some clothes you don’t wear. As you’re getting ready for work, and going through your closet for something to wear, spend a few minutes pulling out ones you haven’t worn in a few months. If they’re seasonal clothes, store them in a box. Get rid of the rest. Do this a little at a time until your closet (and then your drawers) only contains stuff you actually wear.
 15. Clear out your medicine cabinet. If you don’t have one spot for medicines, create one now. Go through everything for the outdated medicines, the stuff you’ll never use again, the dirty-looking bandages, the creams that you’ve found you’re allergic to, the ointments that never had an effect on your energy or your eye wrinkles. Simplify to the essential.
 16. Pull everything out of a drawer. Just take the drawer out and empty it on a table. Then sort the drawer into three piles: 1) stuff that really should go in the drawer; 2) stuff that belongs elsewhere; 3) stuff to get rid of. Clean the drawer out nice, then put the stuff in the first pile back neatly and orderly. Deal with the other piles immediately!
 17. Learn to love the uncluttered look. Once you’ve gotten an area decluttered, you should take the time to enjoy that look. It’s a lovely look. Make that your standard! Learn to hate clutter! Then catch clutter and kill it wherever it crops up.
 18. Have a conversation with your SO or roommate. Sometimes the problem isn’t just with us, it’s with the person or people we live with. An uncluttered home is the result of a shared philosophy of simplicity of all the people living in the house. If you take a few minutes to explain that you really want to have an uncluttered house, and that you could use their help, you can go a long way to getting to that point. Try to be persuasive and encouraging rather than nagging and negative.
“We don’t need to increase our goods nearly as much as we need to scale down our wants. Not wanting something is as good as possessing it.” – Donald Horban]]>
<![CDATA[Who said natural cleaners don’t work?]]>Mon, 04 Apr 2016 02:54:47 GMThttp://maidtheday.ca/maid-the-day-blog/who-said-natural-cleaners-dont-workWho said natural cleaners don’t work?
Certainly not those who have been using our MAID CLEAN Products!

We have been receiving outstanding feedback from our supportive fans and clients. Some of the regular comments we received are:
“I couldn’t believe how well my shower sparkled after cleaning it”
“My bathroom was left smelling so fresh, not at all like when I use those chemical cleaners”
“It was so easy to use, the soap scum just wiped away”

When we ask consumers what they really hate to clean in their home, the majority answer their bathroom. Our Shower, Bath and Toilet Cleaner will take a lot of the chore out of it. The one product will clean the entire bathroom, including shower, base, tiles, bath and toilet, eliminating the need for several products. ABOUT TOXIC CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS
Toxic chemicals are polluting our air and waterways. This has been widely known for many years. However, many consumers are unaware that these same chemicals are used in household cleaning products and are polluting your household and your body. Experts have linked chemicals used in these products to cancer, asthma and nervous system damage. Many have been proven to accumulate in your household and your organs.
Most household poisoning accidents are related to cleaning products and often you have no way of knowing what a product contains. Ours do not contain a warning label such as Poison or Hazardous Material and you should not be exposed to anything that does.
Because there are no legal requirements for manufacturers of cleaning products to disclose their ingredients, many don’t. Others promote themselves as green without explicitly stating their ingredients. We have chosen to list our ingredients clearly on our packaging so that you can see that we are providing a completely natural product.]]>
